I always thought it was yet another Cajun tradition that had been in my family for years, but then I did a little research and learned that it's actually European and has been around forever. We Cajun people like to think we invented everything:) My grandmother always told me that the necklace should be long enough to fit comfortably around baby's neck but short enough that she couldn't pull on it or put it in her mouth. I don't think that the color or design matter at all, as long as you ensure the necklace is authentic amber.
